Arne Slot to Liverpool edges closer as Jurgen Klopp gives thoughts on possible successor

Arne Slot is edging closer to succeeding Jurgen Klopp as the new Liverpool manager, talkSPORT understands.

Liverpool chiefs are confident of tying up a deal for the 45-year-old Feyenoord boss with the Dutch club receptive to negotiations.

Advanced talks have continued on Friday after Slot publicly declared his wish to move to Anfield on Thursday night.

Following Feyenoord’s 3-1 win at Go Ahead Eagles on Thursday which saw them all-but relinquish their Eredivisie crown to PSV Eindhoven, Slot opened up for the first time on his future.

“The clubs are negotiating. I am waiting to see what will come out of it,” he said.

“It is no secret that I would like to go to Liverpool. Now I am waiting for the clubs to reach an agreement. I have every confidence in that.”

Liverpool’s pursuit of the Dutchman will come at a cost with Feyenoord expected to recoup around £8.5million solely for Slot and not his backroom team should they follow him to Merseyside.

Ahead of Liverpool’s trip to West Ham on Saturday lunchtime, Klopp was asked about his potential successor and he provided a ringing endorsement.

“I am not involved in the process, just to clarify that,’ said the outgoing Liverpool boss. “But I like a lot about it, if he is the one. He wants to take the job. Come on, let’s go for it. Excited.

“I like the way his team play football. All the things I hear about him as a guy, (he is) a good guy. Some people I know know him, but I don't know him yet. Some people tell me that he is a really good guy. I like that a lot.

“Good coach, good guy. Looking forward for the club if he is the solution or the man. I’m more than happy. It’s not up to me to judge these things but it all sounds really good to me.

“This is the best job in the world, best club in the world. Obviously now I even help by not finishing on a high, it looks like. There is space for improvement. Great job, great team, fantastic people. He would take a really, really interesting job.”
