Arsenal needed a low-key victory at the weekend and that is exactly what they got.

A 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers got Mikel Arteta’s men back on track in the Premier League title race after a difficult fortnight.

Arsenal dropped behind Manchester City in the standings the previous weekend after succumbing to a surprise 2-0 home loss to Aston Villa. 

Either side of that match, Arsenal failed to beat Bayern Munich in either leg of their Champions League quarter-final, suffering elimination with a 3-2 aggregate defeat as a consequence.

Another negative result against Wolves would not have ended the north London club’s title hopes, but it would have put a further dent in them.

Manchester City have the kindest remaining fixture list and Arsenal have the most difficult, so they cannot afford to fall more than a couple of points behind the defending champions.

Their triumph at Molineux was not particularly eventful, but that will have pleased Arteta. Better to win convincingly by two goals to nil than to edge out your opponents in a seven-goal thriller.

With Liverpool not in action until Wednesday and City playing against Brighton & Hove Albion a day after that, Arsenal have the chance to extend their advantage in top spot when Chelsea come to town.

Success on Tuesday would see them move three points clear of Liverpool and four in advance of City, who would by then have two games in hand. The fact Arteta’s side have the best goal difference in the division could yet be significant. 

Arsenal may ultimately fall short in the title tussle again this term, with City currently the clear favourites with the bookies.

At the very least, they must ensure they keep Pep Guardiola’s team honest. Arsenal would still have reason to feel proud of their efforts if they won their five remaining matches but only finished second or third.

On the other hand, defeats in games like this would leave a bad taste in Arsenal mouths.

Two London rivals will renew hostilities when Arsenal lock horns with Chelsea on Tuesday night.

Chelsea will not be lifting any silverware this season following their elimination from the FA Cup at the weekend.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men were arguably the better team in their semi-final against Manchester City, but they were let down by wasteful finishing in front of goal.

That is an issue that has dogged Chelsea all season. They rank fourth in the expected-goals-per-game table but only seventh for actual goals scored.

On this occasion, though, we do fancy their chances of finding the back of the net. Arsenal may have the strongest defence in the division, but Chelsea are the league’s top scorers over the past four, six and eight games.

It is difficult to see the Blues denying Arsenal victory, however. The Gunners are strong in front of their own fans at the Emirates, which is home to a much-improved atmosphere these days.

Chelsea can still qualify for Europe but their season is in danger of fizzling out. Arsenal can take full advantage in this rearranged fixture.

Arsenal controlled their recent meeting with Wolves but Chelsea may cause them a few more problems here.

Wolves were missing some key players in attack, which made for a pretty comfortable evening as far as Arsenal’s backline was concerned.

But while Chelsea may have more joy going forward than Wolves did, they could struggle to keep Arsenal out at the other end.

The Gunners may lack a prolific centre-forward, but they have scored more goals than anyone else in the Premier League this season.

In 2024, meanwhile, they have found the net either side of half-time in nine of their 23 top-flight assignments.

In January 2023, Arsenal were desperate to sign Mykahilo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk. But in the end, they could not compete with the money Chelsea were able and willing to pay.

The Blues splashed out close to £89m on the signature of the Ukraine international, who duly headed to Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal were left to look for alternatives. They eventually settled on Leandro Trossard, available at the significantly cheaper price of £27m.

Fourteen months on and there is no doubt which club has got the better deal. Mudryk has shown a few signs of improvement this term, but he has hitherto failed to live up to his gargantuan transfer fee.

Trossard, on the other hand, looks like a bargain. Able to play anywhere across the frontline, he is an adept finisher with both feet and an intelligent mover without the ball.

After notching against Wolves last time, the Belgian should keep his place in the team for Tuesday’s tussle with Chelsea.
