Sir Jim Ratcliffe says Man Utd fans have to be ‘a bit patient’

Sir Jim Ratcliffe says Manchester United fans have to be “a bit patient” while he tries to change the fortunes of the club.

United confirmed in December that a deal had been agreed for the 71-year-old and INEOS to take a 25 per cent stake in the club, and this was completed in February. The deal resulted in Ratcliffe’s INEOS taking control of the football operations at United.

United announced the appointment of Jason Wilcox as the club’s new technical director earlier this week.

British billionaire Ratcliffe missed the start of his side’s penalty shootout victory over Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday after taking part in the London marathon but made it for the second-half.

Ten Hag says Man Utd 'got away with it' during FA Cup victory

Ten Hag says Man Utd 'got away with it' during FA Cup victory

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says his side “got away with it” during their penalty shootout victory over Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final.

Despite being 3-0 up in the 71st minute, goals from Ellis Simms, Callum O'Hare and USMNT striker Haji Wright saw Coventry complete a memorable comeback at Wembley.

The Championship side thought they had won the game when Victor Torp scored in the 120th minute but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Ten Hag said: “We have to do better in such occasions but the difficult to do is put ourselves in a winning position, the last thing is much easier. On several occasions, we let ourselves down and let the result slip away but we got away with it.

“So mixed feelings is clear. It's a huge achievement to be twice in an FA Cup final in two years. In the last 20 years, United was in five times. Now two times in two years, a huge achievement.

“But when you are so in control in a game, dominating, you should bring it over the finish. The way we did was not good. From the 70th minute to the end, we made mistakes and it shouldn't have happened.”

Leverkusen score 97th equaliser to save unbeaten run

Bayer Leverkusen scored a 97th-minute equaliser to get a 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund earlier today, extending their unbeaten run to 45 games.

Nicklas Fullkrug gave Dortmund the lead in the 81st minute at Signal Iduna Park.

But Leverkusen, who have made a habit of scoring important late goals this season, equalised right at the death through defender Josip Stanisic.

Leverkusen, who have won 25 of their 30 league games this season, secured the Bundesliga title earlier this month.

They are next in action against Stuttgart at the BayArena next Saturday.

How big of a blow is Dest's injury for the USMNT?

Sunday’s news comes as a major blow to the U.S. men’s national team ahead of this summer’s Copa América. Dest has been a mainstay at right back under Gregg Berhalter, one of a handful of players who are nearly certain to start when available.

In particular, his partnership with Tim Weah has made the right flank an area of strength for the USMNT, particularly when a midfielder like Weston McKennie drifts right to overload the wide space.

If Dest is unable to recover in time for the Copa América’s June kickoff, Joe Scally would project as next-in-line to start on the right.

USMNT defender Dest suffers ‘serious knee injury’, could miss Copa America

USMNT defender Sergino Dest has suffered a “serious knee injury” which could see him miss the Copa America this summer.

The 23-year-old, who is on loan at the Dutch club PSV from Barcelona, is said to have sustained the injury in training and will be out for an “extended period.”

The injury could put his participation at this summer’s Copa America in doubt. The United States are hosting the competition which begins on June 20.

Moyes: West Ham’s Crystal Palace display ‘so bad, I can hardly put it into words’

West Ham United manager David Moyes says his side’s performance in Sunday’s 5-2 defeat to Crystal Palace was “so bad, I can hardly put it into words” and gave a short response when asked about his future.

West Ham were 4-0 down inside 31 minutes at Selhurst Park and Moyes said he had “not had many teams play who’ve played like that in my career”.

The 60-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season and his position was the subject of fan protests at the beginning of the year.

Nottingham Forest considering legal action after Everton loss

Nottingham Forest have questioned the integrity of video assistant referee Stuart Attwell and are considering suing officiating body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) after Sunday’s defeat by Everton.

Forest were aggrieved after referee Anthony Taylor failed to award three penalties during their 2-0 loss at Goodison Park, and VAR Attwell opted not to overrule the decisions.

Forest alleged they raised concerns with the PGMOL, the body responsible for refereeing in England, over Attwell being a supporter of Luton Town, a side one point and one place below Nottingham Forest in the Premier League’s final relegation place.

A statement posted on Forest's official X account minutes after full time read: "Three extremely poor decisions — three penalties not given — which we simply cannot accept.

"We warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan before the game but they didn’t change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times.

"NFFC will now consider its options."

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg, employed by Forest as a match and performance analyst, spoke to PGMOL chief Howard Webb on Friday but, according to PGMOL, he did not ask for Attwell's appointment to be changed and said that he did not have a problem with Attwell's involvement.

The Football Association has confirmed it is investigating the social media post.

Nottingham Forest question VAR integrity after Everton loss

Gateshead removed from National League play-offs

Gateshead have been removed from the National League play-offs due to an alleged failure to meet the criteria for membership to the English Football League.

The EFL explained the decision in a statement on Sunday, confirming Solihull Moors, who had been due to face Gateshead in the play-offs, will instead get a bye to the semi-finals.

Gateshead say they are "extremely disappointed" by the decision and intend to contest it.

The EFL stated the failure to meet its criteria was because the club had been "unable to attain security of tenure to play matches at its stadium for a minimum of 10 seasons".

The National League state the club requested a 10-year security of tenure from Gateshead Council, but this was refused.

Gateshead Council has been contacted for comment.

"Unfortunately, the response received was not supportive of the club’s requirements and placed the club at risk of a refusal of membership to the EFL and therefore forfeiture of any right to participate in the play-offs," a National League statement read.

The EFL added: As the EFL strongly believes in the principles of promotion and relegation it is therefore highly disappointing that appropriate solutions have not been put in place over the previous two-year period, as avoidable circumstances are preventing Gateshead from progressing up the pyramid even if the club achieves success through sporting merit."

"We will endeavour to ensure footballing matters are decided on the pitch," a Gateshead statement read.

Arteta supports Guardiola on scheduling: 'It is not right'

Arteta supports Guardiola on scheduling: 'It is not right'

Getty Images

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta echoed Pep Guardiola's criticism of the fixture scheduling after the clubs' mid-week European exploits.

Guardiola called the scheduling of his side’s FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea “unacceptable”.

Arsenal's 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers came less than 72 hours after their Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich in Germany.

Arteta said his squad stayed in Munich on Wednesday and had "an hour or two hours of sleep" before travelling back to London and preparing for the Wolves clash.

"It’s not about us, Pep or myself it’s about the wellbeing of the players," Arteta said. "When you compete in European competition every team has to compete in the same way. You cannot have a team that hasn’t played for seven days, or three days before and has more recovery time and then you have to play in the Premier League and the FA Cup. It is not right.

"If you look in any angle it’s not right. If you want to protect, let’s talk about the players and the protagonists. Let’s protect the players and do everything we can to give them the maximum time to help them recover and perform and do the show that they do every week."
