Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney recorded the biggest loss of any National League club in history last season.

And that was largely down to an astronomical wage bill considering the Welsh club's position in the football pyramid.

The Hollywood duo bought the Dragons in February 2021 and have turned the club's fortunes around.

Both helped Wrexham end their 15-year absence from the Football League by winning the National League, earning promotion to League Two.

Phil Parkinson’s side sits just three points behind league leaders Stockport County as they eye on back-to-back promotions.

The club's annual financial statement was recently released and it shows both owners are owed around £9million, meaning their investment has almost doubled in two years.

Last season, losses increased to £5.1m, with the Dragons setting a new record in the National League.

The amount exceeded Stockport County's prior record loss of £4.8m during their promotion season in 2022, and it also signifies a notable rise from Wrexham's £2.9m deficit in the same season.

A significant rise in the club's wage bill played a role, as the Dragons disbursed £6.9m over the financial year, averaging £132,600 per week.

A club statement read: "The financial losses suffered by the club since the takeover shouldn't be repeated, with income generated by the club now sufficient to meet the operational costs of the club going forward.

"These losses were deemed necessary to allow the club to maximise its full potential in the shortest time practically possible.

"The club is under no immediate pressure to repay these loans at the expense of the progress we seek to achieve and further financial support will be provided/secured to support the capital expenditure projects the club is currently planning, which includes increasing the capacity of The Racecourse Ground and the development of a training facility for all the club's teams.

"These will significantly increase again for the year ending June 30, 2024, following promotion and the continued popularity of Welcome to Wrexham."
