Chuba Akpom heading for the stars

Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom is one day hoping to emulate the men he grew up watching and lead the line for his boyhood club. The 20 year old, currently on loan at Hull City, is learning invaluable lessons during his time with the Tigers, but he is also looking at the bigger picture.

Following Hull’s humbling 4-1 defeat to Manchester City in the Capital One Cup, the level that Akpom needs to reach is obvious, however being surrounded by stars, including his good friend Raheem Sterling (who’s shirt he left the Etihad with) is motivation for the young goalscorer to continue working hard and taking in every experience that being on loan can give him.

His loan spell with Hull is the first full season he has not been at Arsenal and Akpom says that it is really important to him that he is settled where he is playing, however he went on to say that the Hull squad had been very welcoming, Akpom said “They’re always looking to pass on advice and I’m trying to take in everything that they tell me. To come here as a young player and see so much experience around you is quite refreshing and it is already proving to be an education.”

With striking options at Arsenal a scarcity, the England U21 player may be given his chance sooner than expected. With Arsenal, he has already shown his talent, scoring a hat-trick against the Singaporean Select in pre-season and it is no secret that he is held in high regard at the Emirates by everyone, including Arsene Wenger.

Akpom has scored 3 goals in 19 games this season, however 2 of those came in his first 2 games against Huddersfield and Accrington Stanley respectively, although both of those goals were accomplished finishes, scoring only one goal in the following 17 is not the best record. The Londoner’s recent dip in form is evident, he was substituted against both Bristol City and Man City after failing to make an impact in either game and didn’t make an appearance against Leeds this weekend.

However, Hull manager Steve Bruce is confident Akpom can recapture his form. Bruce said that “Chuba is young, he’s 20, He had a wonderful start but now he’s finding out how difficult it is in the Championship. There’s no doubt about his talent but he’s just a boy. It’s very rare these days to see a young lad make a sustained impact.”

With the amount of experience he has giving him advice, alongside the natural ability that possesses, the young striker could and possibly even should go on and fulfil his potential as a leading striker in the Premiership, however close or far away that may be, his personality and mentality says that he will strive to be the best that he can be.

84% of Metro readers said that Chuba Akpom will one day be Arsenal’s number one striker in a recent online poll, so keep an eye on this young man, because he could be dominating the headlines for some years to come.
