Birmingham City

Where are they now – Birmingham City’s League Cup winners

On the 27th February 2011, Birmingham City shocked Arsenal by beating them 2-1 to win the League Cup.

Nicola Zigic opened the scoring for the Blues, before a last minute Obafemi Martins winner earned Birmingham their first piece of silverware since 1936.

The fortunes of the club have been much changed since then, and they now find themselves in the Championship.

Today, the72 take a look at where the Starting XI from that famous day at Wembley are now playing their football:

Goalkeeper – Ben Foster: Ben Foster appeared 38 times for Birmingham City during his two years at the club. Following their relegation to the Championship, he moved to Midlands rivals West Brom on loan, before signing a permanent deal for the club. He still plays for the Baggies, and has earned well over 100 appearances for the club.

Right Back – Stephen Carr: Stephen Carr was captain of Birmingham City on this famous day. He played well over 106 times for the Blues during his four years at the club. They were the final club he played for before his retirement in 2013. After he hung up his boots, he moved to Spain, where it was believed his family had business interests.

Centre Back – Roger Johnson: Roger Johnson has travelled around clubs frequently since he left Birmingham City in 2011. He joined Midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he spent four years on the books. He’s spent time on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and West Ham United, as well as playing for Indian side Pune City 11 times. He’s currently on the books at Charlton Athletic.

Centre Back – Martin Jiranek: The centre half was at Birmingham for just one year, making only 10 appearances. The former Czech Republic international only really entered the first team picture following an injury to Scott Dann. Following Birmingham’s relegation, Jiranek decided to leave the club, and joined Russian side Terek Grozny. He was there for 2 years, before he moved to another Russian team, FC Tom Tomsk, where he still plays today.

Left Back – Liam Ridgewell: Liam Ridgewell made 152 appearances during his five years at Birmingham City. He left the club in 2012, following in goalkeeper Ben Foster’s footsteps and joining West Brom. He spent two years at the Baggies before a move to USA, where he joined Portland Timbers. In recent years, he’s been loaned out to Wigan Athletic and Brighton, but remains on the books at the American club.
