Declan Rice scores first West Ham goal as Arsenal fall to second successive Premier League away defeat

Will Marko Arnautovic stay, can Samir Nasri recapture past glories, and where, exactly, was Mesut Ozil? Amid all the question marks over big-name performers, it was fast-emerging home-grown prospect Declan Rice who had the decisive say as West Ham deepened Arsenal's problems on the road.

Rice, who turns 20 on Monday, lashed home his first senior goal early in the second half to leave Arsenal without an away league success since the visit to Bournemouth last November. It was only West Ham's second league win in 22 atttempts against their near neighbours.

The future of the London-born defensive talent is already assured, Rice having recently signed a five-and-a-half year contract extension and his man-the-match performance was hailed by Manuel Pellegrini, the West Ham manager.

"Declan will be a top player. He improves in every game he plays," Pellegrini said. "He is very strong, good technique. I am sure he will be a top player soon."

Rice's international destination is less certain. He is eligible for either England or the Republic of Ireland but this was a red-letter day, another step on the way to wider recognition.

Just how much longer Arnautovic resides in east London remains to be seen. The Austrian striker appears to have set his heart on a move to Chinese Super League champions Shanghai SIPG, who are reportedy ready to double his wages.

West Ham have already rebuffed a £35 million offer from the Chinese but after Arnautovic's brother presented an impassioned case for the move to go ahead, the saga threatens to overshadow the forthcoming weeks.

It all has an echo of unhappy events two years ago when another West Ham icon, Dmitri Payet, forced through a move to Marseille that derailed the campaign under then manager Slaven Bilic.

Not that Arnautovic's West Ham sojourn is turning sour just yet. Cheered as his name was announced before kick-off, there was also warm appreciation for his first contribution, spinning the ball out to Michail Antonio on the wing.

There was no doubting his commitment to the cause either, his frustration all too visible when his attempt following some neat West Ham passing was blocked 15 yards out on the half-hour mark. But was that a wave of farewell when he saluted the gallery upon his 71st-minute substitution?

Pellegrini said: "We will see what happens in the next few days and I hope he will take the best decision. I have been in this position a lot of times in my 30 years but I am calm with nothing 100 per cent sure."

Another West Ham forward, Samir Nasri, endured a less friendly reception on his home league debut. His departure from Arsenal for Manchester City in 2011 has been neither forgotten nor forgiven by many Arsenal followers.

The 31-year-old's qualities remain undimmed, scaring Arsenal with a shot from a tight angle,  teeing up Felipe Anderson, only for the Brazilian to drill wide, then laying on the only goal of the game. There were plenty of the old touches on show until his departure, to a standing ovation, 20 minutes from the end.

"He is a top player and when he is 100 per cent fit he will make a difference," said Pellegrini, who was in charge of Nasri during his time at Manchester City.

Despite training all week and being apparently ready to play, Mesut Ozil did not feature in Arsenal's travelling party, raising fresh questions about his role in manager Unai Emery's long-term plans.

"I decided the best players for this match but none of our players are for sale," Emery said. "Mesut has worked this week normally but we win with him and lose with him. The players in this match, they can win."

The Arsenal manager felt his side deserved a share of the spoils. "If you look at the chances in the match, maybe the result was not what we deserved."

Arsenal indeed create openings and should have moved in front after 22 minutes when Sead Kolasinac galloped in from the left but instead of shooting at a clear target, pulled the ball back, allowing the outstanding Rice to scramble clear.

Despite the many fascinating sub-plots, this was a London derby that took a while to burst into life. The first half was well-balanced but largely uneventful but within three minutes of the resumption, there was a dramatic breakthrough.

The home side had resumed positively and when Anderson's cut-back was only cleared as far as Nasri by Granit Xhaka, the newcomer promptly fed Rice who smashed home from 12 yards.

Emery shuffled the pack, replacing Shkodran Mustafi and Xhaka with Aaron Ramsey and Lucas Torreira and switching to a 4-3-3 formation.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alex Iwobi were both narrowly off target as the visitors displayed some sense of urgency but the men from the Emirates failed to score in the league for the first time since the opening weekend of the season on another awayday of deep frustration.

FULL TIME!

West Ham win! Great result and a fantastic performance from Declan Rice.

90 mins+3 - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

Arsenal have the ball in the net again from a great Koscielny header but once again the crosser was offside. West Ham have done enough to see this out! Surely the points are staying in the Olympic Stadium. The Premier League official will be here to hand the points over any minute now...

90 mins+2 - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

Arsenal just don't have enough forward passing options, the ball has to keep being passed backwards or dribbled forwards. They've won a corner after some Iwobi work on the left.

The stadium announcer has just declared Declan Rice is the man of the match, at which point the Sky Sports commentator says "Rolls Rice". That's not going to happen.

90 mins - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

West Ham break with space to run into! Cresswell goes through the middle, needs a runner to his right but Arsenal close that down. Anderson tries to create a chance to shoot but is tackled, West Ham win it back and keep up the pressure but Carroll can't reach a floated cross into the box and Arsenal build from the back again.

88 mins - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

West Ham keeping the ball in Arsenal's half, keeping it and passing it sensibly. They just need to run time down. It's a record attendance in the Olympic Stadium today! What a day. Pints for everyone.

86 mins - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

Aubameyang has the ball in the back of the net but Kolasinac was offside in the build-up. West Ham take their time over the free-kick.

The Sky Sports cameras cut to Arnautovic on the bench, trying to get something out of his teeth with his fingers so it looks like he's trying to eat his own hand.

That tells a story. West Ham pushed high up the pitch, Arsenal way too deep, while the passing looks structured for West Ham and like a whirlwind for Arsenal.

83 mins - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

Antonio off, Obiang on. That could mean a slight change in shape for West Ham and I'd imagine it's defensive one. Obiang will go beside Rice in midfield to make sure there's no space there and force Arsenal out wide. Crosses aren't working for them so just let them attempt more.

80 mins - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

Arsenal are struggling to find a way into this one. West Ham are pressing high up the pitch, stopping them playing out and any long passes are easily won by the far more massive West Ham centre-backs.

78 mins - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

Iwobi is fast! Neeeeeeooooooowwwwwwwww go his fast, blurry legs as he speeds down the left away from everyone. This could be a chance! Iwobi has control of the ball and players inside and he's going so fast and oh. He's passed it backwards and the move is slowed down. West Ham win it back.

Emery is doing some wild interpretive dance on the sidelines, whirring his arms around a lot and looking anxious. Perhaps he's placing a spell upon his players. We can't be sure. Science has only come so far.

75 mins - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

There's every chance he doesn't get sold of course but would you not be slightly perturbed if your employer denied you the chance to earn £300,000 a week to live in China for a bit?

Meanwhile, on the pitch, it's all Arsenal. Last 15 minutes possession:

Carroll wins a free-kick by backing into Sokratis and being hauled to the ground. The defender cannot understand how that's a foul... even though he's clearly fouled him.

72 mins - Arnautovic is off then

Shenanigans! Marko Arnautovic takes his gloves off, waves and applauds the fans as he is substituted. Could it be...?

71 mins - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

Guendouzi has a shot from 20 yards but doesn't get enough on it again. Arsenal have stepped it up a couple of notches, they're finding space to attack and running with purpose. Bellerin comes on for Maitland-Niles.

Snodgrass and Carroll will come on for West Ham, Pellegrini has sensed the changing tide.

68 mins - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

Ramsey has instantly made Arsenal better going forward. He flicks the ball behind for Iwobi to run into, he gets the shot on his left foot and strikes a low one across the box to the far corner. It's just past the post!

66 mins - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

Maitland-Niles does really well to steal the ball from Anderson as he shields it for a goal kick, Ramsey's cross from wide right is struck with power and finds a header at the back post. The shot is poor. West Ham aren't struggling to contain Arsenal here at all.

Or are they!? Kolasinac is ahead of the defence on the left! Aubameyang is inside waiting for the cross, it's low, he controls, goes to the near post and punts the shot way over. That's another wasted chance.

63 mins - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

Kolasinac is totally done by Antonio's turn of pace and is booked for a late, clumsy, and frankly bad sliding challenge. The free-kick is... well let's just say it isn't very good. Antonio ends up booting the ball into the sky to prevent a goal kick but it just flies out for a goal kick.

It looks like it is a 4-2-3-1, Maitland-Niles is the right-back.

60 mins - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

The free-kick is basically a corner and met in the area by a head... but it's wide.

Emery makes the changes. Xhaka off, Torreira on. Ramsey on, Mustafi off. That'll be a change to a 4-2-3-1. I don't understand why Emery persists with this 3-4-3 formation, it never seems to really work that well.

58 mins - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

Anderson goes on a run, dribbles past a tackle, keeps going, still going, in the box, he holds off a defender, pretends to back heel and keeps the ball, wins a corner and WEst Ham keep up the pressure. Lacazette kicks Noble while he's trying to shield the ball in the corner and that'll be a free-kick. Noble enjoyed that little battle.

55 mins - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

Mistake at the back! The ball is passed inside from a wide player in the West Ham defensive third and Guendouzi easily intercepts! He strides forward, has space, and shoots. Low and just wide of the left post.

52 mins - West Ham 1 Arsenal 0

Arsenal nearly prove the 'most vulnerable after scoring' rule accurate but can't get a shooting opportunity away from their attack, then Fabianski has to dive to prevent a header rolling into his own net.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLL!

DECLAN RICE SCORES HIS FIRST WEST HAM GOAL!

Anderson keeps the corner alive, runs past Lacazette and Nasri just moves the ball on for the better positioned Rice. His finish is top corner and perfectly struck, while the celebration is more enthusiastic than if he were given an N64 for Christmas when you were 11.

48 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

Mustafi slides in late to Anderson and wins a yellow card as the prize for his action. West Ham have a free-kick on the corner of the box and will whip this in... and Kolasinac heads over the bar. Corner.

KICK OFF 2

We're back! Arsenal start the second half.

Some little numbers for you

Arsenal don't like scoring in the first half do they? 'First half wins are for suckers' is actually written on the wall in Emery's office, cut out of newspapers like some maniac philosopher.

Both managers should commission a poster that says 'think about where you're shooting' because some of today's efforts have been wilder than Gene. As in Gene Wilder.

HALF TIME

West Ham should be winning this after that Rice chance, Arsenal carved some opportunities too but this is the exact kind of game best viewed while lying down on a sofa half asleep. A goal would lighten it up.

45 mins+1 - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

RICE MUST SCORE! Ohhhhhh he's missed. From 10 yards out Rice has planted his header wide of the far post, the corner planted perfectly into a position for him to meet it with power and placement. That was the chance.

45 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

This feels like a lazy Saturday end to the first half. Neither team is quiiiiite clicking yet. West Ham win a corner thanks to some hard running from Zabaleta and Rice. Anderson will take it.

42 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

Anderson plays a clever little pass to get out of a tight situation, it's booted forward, Noble controls superbly, Zabaleta sprints through the middle to carry it forward, Antonio cuts onto his left foot and then, of course, balloons some hopeless effort into the stand.

39 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

Nothing much. It's quietened down slightly, Guendouzi took a little knock to his shoulder too.

36 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

Classic. Guendouzi hits the side netting, Arsenal fans cheer, West Ham fans respond with a much louder cheer. That effort was exactly like the one Raheem Sterling "scored" against Italy in 2014, if that helps.

33 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

Big chance! West ham chip over the defence, Arnautovic brings it down, Nasri waits for the run of Anderson and tees him up for a shot from 20 yards. It's dragged wide but that was a good strike, hit with power and enough to beat the goalkeeper.

32 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

Maitland-Niles takes on Cresswell but loses out, both teams are moving from back to front quickly. Anderson slows things down and lets his teammates get back into shape, which is pretty wise considering how Arsenal want to counter-attack them anyway.

Possession is being swapped a lot in the midfield, both teams scrappy with the ball.

29 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

Strong tackle by Kolasinac on Anderson but it's a fair one and the Brazilian doesn't mind. That's the good kind of battle, there's nothing worse than when the person you've slide tackled takes exception. Anderson then dances into the box, the ball drops for Arnautovic and his shot is blocked.

26 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

West Ham enjoy some attacking possession and are moving the ball around quite nicely. Nasri is involved, brings others into play, spots the space and darts into it for the one-two! Chance to shoot... and it's just wide of the near post!

23 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

Kolasinac breaks the offside trap but West Ham's defence are so deep that they quickly flood the box and the low cross put in is cleared away.

West Ham effectively mirroring Arsenal's formation here purely because Rice is being forced to drop so deep to help in defence.

21 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

Arsenal still attacking strongly, West Ham coping with the danger near their own box.

18 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

West Ham still playing balls into the channels behind the Arsenal wing-backs, usually down the right. Arnautovic makes the run this time but that means nobody's inside the pitch to receive the cross and Leno can just cut it out.

Lacazette is looking dangerous today, there's a goal in there.

15 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

Kolasinac is wide open again! Iwobi doesn't know he's there, Lacazette nips into the area and shoots - saved - then shoots over from close range on the rebound. What a waste! Is Kolasinac not shouting for them there?

That's happened twice now. Arsenal getting overloads when they attack every time.

12 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

Felipe Anderson gets involved for the first real time, cutting in from the right wing to take a shot on his left. It's curled wide and high of the posts.

9 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

West Ham are attacking the right flank early on, taking advantage of Kolasinac being there. Arsenal have a really deep defensive line today and attempts to play direct passes into the channels for the forwards are being easily cut out.

This one's worked though! Lacazette has space to control on the chest, looks at the goal and tries a dipping volley on the bounce. It's punted wide this time but that was a decent chance!

6 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

West Ham kicking goal kicks long, heading back, passing back, goalkeeper kicks long. The teams look pretty evenly matched early on here... and suddenly Guendouzi takes the ball for a run. Kolasinac is in miles of space on his left... still in space, still in space! He doesn't make the pass.

West Ham break, Antonio sprints down the right, Noble makes a one-two with Nasri and shoots down the middle. Saved easily.

3 mins - West Ham 0 Arsenal 0

The West Ham fans finish singing about bubbles and then do one of those 'ROAAAAAAR!' noises before falling silent. That'll get the lads going.

On the pitch the home team are passing around their own half, trying to draw Arsenal out. Rice gets away with a bad error, Lacazette can't use the gift of possession he's been handed... and eventually Leno is involved, chipping the ball away from his box.

KICK OFF

Here we go! West Ham get us started beneath the bubbles.

Jack Wilshere isn't exactly full of energy

Everything he's asked is responded to in a voice as though your mum is phoning you and you've just woken up and you can't even hide it. It's 12:30pm, time to get up Jack. There are crisps on the floor. Why are there crisps on the floor?

The managers' words

Manuel Pellegrini

Marko is not thinking about other things, had a complete week with the squad. At the moment he's in the starting XI because he's important here.

I know Sami very well, he played already in the cup. He's working for around 14 day with the squad, he's not ready for 90 minutes but he'll be important.

I hope today is a team who is balanced and aggressive. We are going for the three points.

Unai Emery

"For us it's very important for the table and we are to play a derby and they are to play a big motivation.

"Very different match. Some players are the same, after 20 matches we can be better also."

I'll be honest, I completely lost track of what Emery was saying. He's so so so quick when he talks and it doesn't always make sense when you write it down.

Some stats for you

The Ozil saga

It turns out Mr Ozil is actually perfectly fit and could easily have played today...

The return of Samir Nasri

Credit: GETTY IMAGES

With no IV drips in sight, Samir Nasri will be on the pitch and ready to do damage to his old club today. Does he still have the magic? Was he ever that amazing? I really can't remember. Nasri seems to be one of those players in touching distance of the upper second tier in the Premier League (a £30million player) but who tends to act like he's a £15million.

Jack Wilshere is here

"It was a dream move, my family and me have always been West Ham fans. I got an injury but I'm close to being back with the boys. We really feel we can push now and close that gap."

Starting lineups

And those are the teams. I think Arsenal are playing a back three again with Maitland-Niles at wide right and Sead Kolasinac at wide left.

Welcome

Hello! Get ready - it's Premier League time! Arsenal travel all the way over to Stratford in London for this one, all the lads getting the overground from Highbury & Islington listening to their various headphones.

It's an early kick off so we might be a little short of goals this afternoon but let's just forget about previous 12:30pms... this one will blow our minds. Will Marko Arnautovic be up for this one? There are loud noises that he wants to escape for the riches of China but West Ham need him - is Andy Carroll going to be the man to bully the Arsenal defence?

Speaking of that defence, Arsenal's injury crisis might finally be close to an end. Almost all of those crocked centre-backs and full-backs are near ready for a return to first team action and they better be because this West Ham side can play.

Felipe Anderson is the star of the show and will take advantage of any weakness in the back line, but, equally, Arsenal can be amazing when going forward. Teams will be with us any minute now, at which point we can start to suss out how this match may go.
