Chelsea vs West Ham United predictions

Chelsea’s season has contained its fair share of highs and lows, often with little space between the two.

So even though it is less than two weeks since the Blues were thrashed 5-0 by Arsenal, the prevailing mood around Stamford Bridge right now is one of cautious optimism.

That owes to Chelsea’s last two results. Away to Aston Villa, a spirited second-half showing saw the west Londoners overturn a 2-0 deficit to leave with a point.

Then, in a rearranged fixture on Thursday, Chelsea eased to a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.

All of a sudden, a top-six finish is no longer out of the question. Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who sit eighth heading into the weekend, are two points behind seventh-placed Newcastle United and three adrift of Manchester United in sixth.

Zoom out a little and you realise that Chelsea have been pretty tough to beat of late, notwithstanding that demolition at the hands of Arsenal.

Chelsea have lost just one of their last 11 Premier League fixtures dating back to the middle of February. In that time, only the top three of Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool boast better points-per-game records.

That is a boon to Pochettino, who has almost certainly earned a stay of execution. The Argentine will push for the signing of some experienced players ahead of next term, but there is plenty of promise within Chelsea’s young squad.

A strong end to the campaign - and perhaps European qualification, for which a top-seven finish is probably required - would give the Blues a sense of positive momentum heading into the summer.

West Ham United are still in the mix for European football, albeit as outsiders. Two points behind Chelsea having played a game more, they probably need to win each of their three remaining matches to stand a chance of sneaking in.

Chelsea vs West Ham United betting tips

European hopefuls and London rivals Chelsea and West Ham United will renew hostilities on Sunday.

Chelsea to win - 4/6 (Betfred)

Chelsea have struggled on the road this term. Even during their recent uptick, they have found it tough to emerge victorious at opposition stadiums. Their last 12 away games in the Premier League have produced just two wins.

On the flip side, Chelsea are beginning to make Stamford Bridge a fortress again. They have taken 13 points from the last 15 available on familiar turf, a statistic that will worry West Ham ahead of their trip across the capital.

The Hammers’ season is in danger of fizzling out. The Europa League was the only thing keeping them going, but they were dumped out of the competition by Bayer Leverkusen last month.

West Ham have won only one of their last eight Premier League matches. Over that period, only Nottingham Forest, Brighton & Hove Albion, Sheffield United and Luton Town have worse records.

Chelsea are in better form than the Hammers and Stamford Bridge has become a tough place to visit. Go for a home victory here.

Draw at half-time - 8/5 (Betfred)

It may take a while for Chelsea to find their rhythm on Sunday. They will not be short of motivation against another crosscity adversary, but West Ham have had longer to prepare for this fixture.

Indeed, whereas Chelsea will have been in action less than 72 hours before this weekend’s game is due to kick off, West Ham will have had eight days in between fixtures.

The Blues have also been hit by an injury crisis, with up to 14 first-team players set to be sidelined for this match. No team in the division has as many absentees right now.

David Moyes, who looks to be coming towards the end of his tenure at the London Stadium, has lost the faith of many West Ham supporters.

The Scot retains an ability to set up a team well defensively, though, and Chelsea may struggle to break West Ham down in the opening 45 minutes.

It is worth noting that 18 of Chelsea’s 34 Premier League encounters have been level at the break, second only to Crystal Palace (19).

Choose a draw at half-time at 8/5 with Betfred

Noni Madueke to score any time - 15/8 (Betfred)

Noni Madueke has forced his way into Pochettino’s first-choice XI in recent weeks.

He was bright in the victory over Tottenham. Madueke’s willingness to run at defenders and take people on speaks to his increased confidence.

Like many young players, his final ball is not always the most consistent. But Chelsea fans like what they have seen of late.

With Raheem Sterling among the absentees, Madueke will keep his place in the team this weekend.

The 22-year-old scored in the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa and he can make an impression against West Ham too.

Go for Noni Madueke as an anytime scorer at 15/8 with Betfred
