Bayern Munich head into tonight's first leg as favourites for victory against Real Madrid in their Champions League semi final, which they head into having won their last four matches in all competitions.

The Champions League is the only competition Thomas Tuchel's side can win this season as they aim to avoid a trophyless season for the first time in 13 years.

This season brought the end to Bayern's 11-year constant run of being German champions to an end, with Bayer Leverkusen having crowned Bundesliga champions this season for the first time in their history, under the management of former Bayern player Xabi Alonso.

The six-time European champions reached their first Champions League semi final since they last lifted the trophy four years ago, by finishing top of Group A ahead of Copenhagen, Galatasaray and Manchester United, before navigating their way bast Lazio and Arsenal to reach the last four.

Standing in their way of a 12th European final is a Real Madrid side well on their way to a record-extending 36th La Liga title, with Carlo Ancelotti's side currently 11 points clear at the top of the table with just five games of the season remaining.

The Spanish side head into tonight's semi final having won seven of their last eight matches in all competitions, the only blemish on that record coming in their quarter final first leg game against defending champions Manchester City, who Madrid ended up knocking out on penalties.

Los Blancos have lost just two games in all competitions this season, both of which coming at the hands of arch rivals Atletico Madrid, the most recent of which coming in the Copa del Rey back in January, with the other coming way back in September.

Real Madrid are the only unbeaten side remaining in the Champions League this season, having finished top of their group with a 100% winning record against Napoli, Braga and Union Berlin, before knocking out Leipzig prior to tournament favourites and defending champions Man City to book their place in the semi final.

Bayern Munich are winless in their last six matches against Real Madrid, including defeats in five of those games, though the two teams haven't met since the same stage of this competition six years ago.
