Barcelona vs Valencia predictions

They may still have six fixtures left to fulfil, but to all intents and purposes Barcelona’s season is over.

Last week, a 4-1 home defeat by Paris Saint-Germain brought about their elimination from the Champions League at the quarter-final stage, despite the fact they had won the first game 3-2 in France.

The red card shown to Ronald Araujo after 30 minutes of that match proved costly and Xavi Hernandez lamented the referee’s decision, but others felt Barcelona were architects of their own downfall.

On Sunday, the Blaugrana’s slim La Liga title hopes were extinguished. A victory over leaders Real Madrid would have moved Barcelona within five points of the summit of the standings. They still would have been outsiders in the race, but a win in the capital would have at least kept things interesting in the final weeks of the campaign.

Instead, Barcelona succumbed to a 3-2 loss, with Jude Bellingham notching the winner for Madrid in second-half stoppage time. That means Xavi’s men head into the weekend 11 points adrift of top spot.

The gap could be even larger by the time this match kicks off on Monday night, with Madrid in action against Real Sociedad on Friday.

Given Barcelona are almost certainly guaranteed a place in next season’s Champions League, there is not much on the line for them against Valencia.

Perhaps there is for Xavi, though. Towards the end of January, the club legend announced that he would not continue as Barcelona manager beyond 2023/24.

However, reports this week suggest he could be about to perform a u-turn, although the final decision would rest with the president Joan Laporta.

As things stand it is more likely than not that Barcelona will have a new manager next term, but a strong finish to the campaign could earn Xavi a stay of execution.

Barcelona vs Valencia betting tips

Barcelona are looking to secure second place in La Liga, while Valencia are chasing European qualification.

Valencia or draw - 2/1 (Betfred)

For many years Valencia struggled on the road. Their away record was the fourth-worst in La Liga last season, for instance. In 2020/21, no team in the division amassed fewer points on unfamiliar territory.

Thankfully for Valencia’s travelling fans, the team has made improvements in this department in 2023/24. Los Che rank a respectable 10th in the away table this time around.

Valencia have avoided defeat in half of their 16 away trips up to now, while on Monday they will be chasing a third consecutive victory at an opposition ground.

Unlike their upcoming opponents, Ruben Baraja’s side have plenty to play for in the weeks ahead.

A top-six finish would bring Europa League football to Mestalla, with only a four-point deficit to make up. They are just one point behind Real Betis in seventh, the Europa Conference League qualification berth.

Barcelona will be on a downer after back-to-back defeats in two of their most important games of the campaign, so avoiding defeat does not look like a gargantuan task for Valencia.

At the odds available, this is an attractive selection for football bettors.

0-0 at half-time - 23/10 (Betfred)

Barcelona have at times been slow to get going this term. That is even more likely to be the case here after those damaging losses to Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

Valencia’s priority in the opening 45 minutes will be to sit in and hope that the home crowd grows frustrated.

Baraja’s team will not take too many risks in the first half, with 0-0 an excellent scoreline at the interval for the visitors.

Valencia rank second-bottom for first-half goals scored, while Barcelona are surprisingly low at 13th.

A whopping 70 percent of the Blaugrana’s goals this season have come after the break, by far the highest rate in La Liga.
