Manchester City vs Chelsea predictions

There are still ways in which Manchester City can make more history this season, but one particular path into the record books is now closed off.

City were seeking to become the first European club to win the 'double treble' - that is, the league title, the primary domestic cup and the Champions League in back-to-back campaigns.

Pep Guardiola's side lead the way in the Premier League and are the favourites to triumph in the FA Cup too, but the holders were knocked out of Europe's principal club competition in midweek.

In many ways they were unfortunate to taste defeat at the hands of Real Madrid on Wednesday evening.

After a thrilling 3-3 draw in Spain last week, City dominated the second leg at the Etihad Stadium. Madrid took the lead in the first half, but it was pretty much one-way traffic thereafter.

Yet although City equalised through Kevin De Bruyne, they could not get the all-important third goal of the night. Madrid held on for 120 minutes and then came out on top in the penalty shoot-out.

City will be feeling low after their Champions League exit, but Guardiola will have spent the last few days reiterating to his players that this could still be a successful season for City.

A domestic double would certainly be enough to fit that description and Guardiola’s men are eight wins away from securing that.

Yet it could be argued that Chelsea are the toughest opponents Manchester City could have faced in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Manchester United are above the Blues in the Premier League table but not by much, and Chelsea recently beat Erik ten Hag’s side at Stamford Bridge. Coventry City, the other semi-finalists, are a Championship team.

The FA Cup holders should not take anything for granted ahead of their first trip to Wembley since August.

Manchester City vs Chelsea betting tips

Manchester City are the favourites but they will not necessarily have everything their own way in this one.

Draw - 16/5 (Copybet)

Chelsea fell short on their last trip to Wembley, losing 1-0 to a youthful Liverpool team in the EFL Cup final.

They will be looking to write that wrong against Manchester City, against whom they have performed reasonably well this season.

These two outfits played out an entertaining 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge in November, before Chelsea held City to a 1-1 draw in the return game earlier this year.

For all their struggles this term, Chelsea have tended to raise their game against the biggest teams in the country. They have beaten Manchester United and Tottenham, as well as drawing with Liverpool, Arsenal and City (twice).

Chelsea have had longer to prepare for this match and their most recent encounter, a 6-0 thrashing of Everton, was not as taxing as City’s two-hour duel with Real Madrid.

It may take extra time or even penalties for this FA Cup semi-final to be decided.

Both teams to score - 5/8 (Copybet)

As we discussed above, there were goals at both ends in the two prior meetings between Manchester City and Chelsea this term.

Erling Haaland had a quiet night against Real Madrid and it is not impossible that he will begin this semi-final on the bench, but City pack a punch in attack with or without the Norway international.

Guardiola’s men have not been as solid defensively of late, however. They have now gone five games without a clean sheet and, in domestic matches away from the Etihad, have managed just two shut-outs in their last 11.

Chelsea have shown a few signs of improvement of late, scoring at least two goals in each of their last six Premier League matches - as well as in four of their five FA Cup ties up to now.

Both goalkeepers may have to pick the ball out of the back of the net at least once on Saturday.

Cole Palmer to score any time - 9/4 (Copybet)

Few tears were shed when Manchester City sold Cole Palmer to Chelsea last summer. But there are many City fans who now wish that move did not happen.

It is true that Palmer would probably not be having the same impact had he stayed at the Etihad, not least because competition for places is more fierce there.

But the 21-year-old is thriving in new surroundings. A spectacular four-goal haul against Everton last time out moved him onto 20 strikes for the Premier League season, level with Erling Haaland in the race for the Golden Boot.

Palmer has ice in his veins and he never seems to be fazed, so we can expect him to rise to the occasion against his former club at Wembley.

He is Chelsea’s designated penalty taker (despite a squabble between Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson when Pochettino’s side were awarded one against Everton), which only increases his chances of introducing the ball to the net.
