Exclusive: Man Utd prepared to sanction double loan move for forwards in summer 2024

Manchester United are prepared to sanction fresh loans move for Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood this summer, HITC understands.

Sancho is currently on-loan at Borussia Dortmund, who he joined in January, whilst Greenwood is with Spanish side Getafe, who did a deal for him last summer.

The situations surrounding both England internationals are somewhat different, but the reasoning behind both loans was the same – to bolster or at least maintain their market value, and that is confirmed by the fact neither deal has an option to make the move permanent.

Jason Sancho and Mason Greenwood deals being discussed

Greenwood departed Old Trafford last summer after they announced that he would not play for the club again due to them prioritising the ‘welfare, wishes and perspective’ following an internal investigation after the player was suspended from January 2022 after being arrested – although charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.

The club’s new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has spoken about Greenwood in recent months, raising the possibility that the club would consider a return – although HITC understands that remains highly unlikely at this stage.

“It’s a fresh decision, I can talk about the principle. I’m not going to talk about Mason,” Ratcliffe said after INEOS’ minority shareholding in United was confirmed.

“I am familiar with (the situation). The principle is the important one. We will have other issues going forwards.

“We need to make a fair decision in the light of the club’s values. That’s what we need to do and that’s how we will deal with it.

“We need to look at facts, judge fairly and take into consideration what the values of the club are. Then we come out of that with a decision. It is not appropriate for me to comment on Mason Greenwood.”

HITC revealed earlier this year that both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid had both shown concrete interest in a possible deal – but Ratcliffe’s comments meant any hope they had of a cut-price deal were ruled out.

Greenwood has impressed hugely at Getafe playing mainly on the right – which has seen him score six times and claim five assists so far this term.

Getafe are keen to bring Greenwood back, either permanently or again on-loan, whilst both Barca and Atletico would consider a loan but, unlike Getafe, they would want an option to make the move permanent.

HITC understands that other clubs from around Europe have shown an interest in Greenwood including Inter Milan and Juventus, but sources suggest that the 22-year-old is ‘very settled’ in Spain and that is where he would prefer to stay – even ahead of a move back to Manchester.

Erik Ten Hag future could impact on Sancho and Greenwood

A change of manager – which is a possibility at United this summer – won’t impact on Greenwood’s situation, but the same is not completely accurate when it comes to Sancho.

Sancho departed United in January after he publicly fell out with Erik Ten Hag and refused to apologise. That led to United loaning him but it was Sancho who insisted on returning to Dortmund.

HITC has previously revealed that United have already had talks with Dortmund as they were informed they wanted a permanent sale – but the German side made it clear they would like another year’s loan and then a deal the year after.

HITC understands that Sancho is very happy with life back in Dortmund and has shown little ambition to return to United – even though his main adversary Ten Hag could part company with the Red Devils.

Like with Greenwood, sources have confirmed to HITC that United would like to sell Sancho – but would only sell him at a reasonable price, therefore they are already accepting that a loan deal for both players is the most likely option.

Sancho is currently contracted to United until 2026, the same date that Greenwood is set to be – his current deal runs to 2025 but HITC understands that United intend to use that option – if a permanent deal is not concluded.
