Manchester United's mooted coaching role move for Gary O'Neil has been labelled as 'insulting' to the Wolves manager.

That's according to Gabby Agbonlahor, who also echoed talkSPORT's Alex Crook in claiming how unlikely it would be for O'Neil to accept.

talkSPORT have revealed Wolves will attempt to get their head coach tied down to a new contract to fend off interest from rival clubs.

O’Neil took over at Molineux days before the season started and has steered them to ninth - only six points adrift of the Red Devils.

His impressive spell in charge has sparked reports that senior figures at Man United see the 40-year-old as a solid candidate to join the club’s coaching staff.

While talkSPORT understands it is highly unlikely O'Neil would sacrifice his current position even for a move to Old Trafford, Agbonlahor claimed the former Bournemouth gaffer would be offended should they even try.

He told the talkSPORT Breakfast: "I think he'd be insulted, you know? I think he'll be insulted.

"If he's going to train today and he sees this story, he'll say, 'So I'm going to leave a job where I've been outstanding this season for Wolverhampton Wanderers and go and be a coach?

"Managers want to be managers, they don't want to be coaches.

"They go and be a coach if they're struggling and they're out of work and they're like, 'I've gotta be a coach to go and get work'.

"Some of these stories that are coming out are a bit ridiculous now."

Agbonlahor's Breakfast co-host Natalie Sawyer agreed with the former Aston Villa captain's assessment, but did pose one potential route United could take.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil reveals that the club are financially stable and won't be forced into selling key players in the summer

Erik ten Hag’s future is reportedly unclear ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, with a potential manager-in-waiting role for O'Neil proving the only thing that may convince him.

Sawyer added: "I suppose the only way it would work is if he's given some assurance that - and I know it's very difficult to give that in football - but some assurance that you would be next in line.

"But yeah I agree with you, I just think that's barmy.

"Why would you leave a manager's job to be a coach?"
